Sulfolane, also known as tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide, chemical formula C4H8O2S, is a colorless and transparent liquid. It is an excellent non proton polar solvent and can be miscible with water, acetone, toluene, and other solvents. It is also an ideal solvent for aromatic hydrocarbon extraction processes in petrochemical industry. Sulfolane is prone to decomposition at high temperatures. At temperatures below 220 ℃, the decomposition rate is relatively slow, but above 220 ℃, as the temperature increases, its decomposition rate sharply increases. Excessive temperatures will promote the decomposition of sulfolane into black polymers and sulfur dioxide. In the presence of air, due to the oxidation of air, the release of sulfur dioxide in the solvent system is greater than in the absence of air.
