As the resin is gel-like structure, the ion exchange process with the aqueous solution can be explained by the double-electrical layer theory.
The double- electrical layer theory suggests that the exchangeable ions on the resin molecules are formed by the ionization of the active groups on the resin in water. When the resin is in water, its exchangeable ions diffuse into the body under the action of water molecules; the result of the diffusion causes the charge on the substrate to have an opposite charge to the exchangeable ion charge sign; thus, Attractiveness and inhibit the further diffusion of exchangeable ions. As a result, under the action of concentrated diffusion and electrostatic attraction, two double-layer structures are formed.
