The full name of extruded polystyrene insulation board, also known as XPS extruded board. It is a rigid foam plastic board made of polystyrene resin as raw material plus other raw materials and excipients and polymers, which is heated, mixed and injected with catalyst, and then extruded.

1. Thermal insulation performance:
The insulation performance of EPS and XPS with the same thickness gradually increases. EPS is 0.041, XPS is 0.030. Therefore, when achieving the same insulation effect, XPS board has a thinner thickness than EPS board, but the price of pure board XPS board is higher than EPS board. If we consider the process and building height, the price per square meter of XPS is actually more expensive than EPS.
For insulation, the main focus is on the thermal inertia index D, which is directly proportional to the thermal storage coefficient. However, in terms of the entire system, the heat storage capacity of 200mm concrete is already large enough, and with the addition of an external insulation layer, it fully meets the energy-saving requirements. This is also the reason why national regulations require the comprehensive thermal conductivity and thermal storage coefficient of walls to meet the requirements simultaneously. EPS or XPS thin plaster systems fully meet the requirements.
2. Strength:
The strength pointed out here should be tensile strength, and there is a relationship between the unit weight of polystyrene board and tensile strength. Generally, the tensile strength of EPS with a unit weight of 18Kg/m3 is 110~120KPa, and that of 20Kg/m3 is around 140KPa. The bulk density of XPS normally ranges from 25Kg to 45Kg, and the strength ranges from 150KPa to 700KPa or higher. (Provided that the thermal conductivity coefficient is around 0.03).
The strength of XPS board ranges from 200KPa to 250KPa, while most domestic manufacturers' XPS board is generally between 100-200KPa, while EPS board is below 100KPa. In the increasingly rich exterior decoration and frequent typhoons in coastal areas, strength is very important, especially for some exterior wall tiling or high-rise buildings, both types of boards need to be reinforced or fixed with fixed parts to assist in fixation. The pulling force of ceramic tiles should be greater than 400KPa, and even XPS cannot withstand it. The solution is to anchor the steel wire mesh to the base layer through expansion bolts, which can disperse tensile stress into three-dimensional space. Therefore, as long as the anchoring is appropriate, the failure point of the pulling force must be in the crack resistant mortar layer of the composite steel wire mesh, which is not a major problem.
Compared to EPS, XPS board has higher strength, but due to its brittleness, compared to XPS board, there is a higher possibility of cracking in the exterior wall decorative layer when the adhesive area is large, especially in the paint surface layer. Flexibility is a matter of material properties. Taking plastering as an example, emotional understanding usually involves applying a batch of plastering to a polystyrene board, and then observing to what extent the polystyrene board has been bent without cracking. If the flexibility is good, it will not crack even after a few turns of bending. Similar to the ductility index in waterproof materials. However, in terms of the material itself, the flexibility of EPS is superior to XPS.
3. Weathering resistance:
Weathering resistance refers to the adaptability of insulation systems to external weather changes, which refers to a series of quality related issues such as the overall stability of the system and whether there are changes in insulation effects under different climatic conditions. Weathering resistance is a very important indicator of insulation systems.
Due to the higher water absorption of EPS board compared to XPS, its weather resistance is not as good as XPS system. But the ductility of EPS board is better than XPS board, which can overcome certain defects. However, in terms of the system, the outer layer of the thin plastering system also has a certain waterproof ability. Except during the construction process, the waterproof performance of both intact systems is acceptable. The contact between rainwater on the exterior wall and the wall is vertical, and as long as the surface mortar does not crack, waterproofing is not a problem.
In addition, wind pressure resistance is also an important aspect of weather resistance, as the more cavity the system has, the poorer its wind pressure resistance. So the key depends on the size of the bonding area between the entire insulation system and the base layer. There are no issues with the XPS system and EPS system at this point.
4. Breathability:
Breathability and water absorption are two issues! The size difference between air molecules and water molecules is significant! Of course, there is a saying that it is breathable and impermeable. There are experiments to illustrate this point. For example, in Shenzhen. Put a biscuit outside and you don't need to water it. Over time, the biscuit will soften because it absorbs water from the air instead of liquid water.
In the insulation system, no product dares to claim that its product has good breathability, good thermal conductivity, good waterproof performance, and does not absorb water. Good things are all in the hands of one company. Because these indicators are contradictory, and the breathability also needs to pay attention to the breathability after wet water during the construction process and the breathability after the system is completed.
However, the new XPS extruded board, whose material itself does not absorb water and has a lower thermal conductivity than all existing insulation materials, is a national energy-saving building insulation material. During construction, the use of bonding mortar, mesh cloth, and plaster mortar on xps boards can completely eliminate condensation and other phenomena. If the xps board is exposed to the outer layer, there is a possibility of condensation regardless of the material insulation board being exposed in the space. However, due to its use as insulation material, there is no problem of condensation at all.
