The operating efficiency of Blet C-100E for softening treatment is determined by the following parameters:


a) The concentration and amount of regenerant used;


b) The total hardness and content of the treated water;


c) The flow rate of incoming water flowing through the bed.


Low regeneration level and high hardness removal effect are required in the softening of tap water, as acceptable water quality is obtained through the operation of a spray steam system (in which raw water is mixed with completely softened steam to produce incoming water). In the brewing industry or food processing water preparation, the effluent water quality requires a hardness of less than 5ppm, which can be obtained by using 70-80g of salt per liter of resin. [3]


Under normal operating conditions, the hardness leakage value is usually less than 1% of the total hardness of the influent, and the working exchange capacity is not affected, unless the Na (or one of its valence ions) ion content in the influent is too high, greater than 25% of the total number of exchangeable cations. The pressure drop is related to particle distribution, bed depth, exchange column porosity, flow rate, and fluid viscosity. Any factor that affects these parameters will affect the pressure drop.

The pressure drop through the bed is usually influenced by several factors such as resin distribution, bed height, space of the ion exchange column, inlet flow rate, viscosity (temperature dependent), etc.


During backwashing, the resin bed layer will expand to 50-75%, with the aim of removing solids brought by the liquid inlet and voids and bubbles in the exchange column, and redistributing resin particles to obtain resistance. During backwashing, the backwashing flow rate should be gradually increased to avoid overloading caused by resin impact. The bed expansion rate increases with the increase of flow rate and decreases with the increase of temperature, as shown in Figure 2. Attention should be paid to preventing excessive expansion to prevent resin from flowing out.


Chemical stability and temperature resistance


Purolite C-100E is insoluble in low and medium concentrations of acids, bases, and general solvents. However, prolonged exposure to free chlorine, hypochlorite, and other strong oxidizing agents should be avoided to prevent chain breakage, which can lead to high resin moisture content and a decrease in mechanical strength. Like all styrene sulfonated resins, the salt type (sodium type or alkaline earth metal type) is resistant to temperatures up to 150 ℃, while the acid type tends to hydrolyze above 120 ℃, and the sulfonic group is replaced by hydroxyl groups.
