A varistor is actually a sensitive element with nonlinear volt ampere characteristics. Under normal voltage conditions, it is equivalent to a small capacitor. When an overvoltage occurs in a circuit, its internal resistance drops sharply and quickly conducts, increasing its working current by several orders of magnitude, effectively protecting other components in the circuit from overvoltage and damage.
