1. Basic principle:
When pure water and saline are separated by an ideal semi permeable membrane, which only allows water to pass and prevents salt from passing, the water on the pure water side of the membrane will spontaneously flow through the semi permeable membrane into the saline side. This phenomenon is called permeation. If pressure is applied on the saline side of the membrane, the spontaneous flow of water will be suppressed and slowed down. When the applied pressure reaches a certain value, the net flow rate of water passing through the membrane is equal to zero, and this pressure is called osmotic pressure, When the pressure applied to the brine side of the membrane is greater than the osmotic pressure, the flow direction of water will be reversed, and at this time, the water in the brine will flow into the pure water side. The above phenomenon is the basic principle of reverse osmosis (RO) treatment of water.

3. Reverse osmosis process
Reverse osmosis technology relies on pressure greater than osmotic pressure to complete the filtration process through the capillary action of the membrane.
The reverse osmosis technology treatment process includes three parts: pre-treatment process, membrane component connection process, and post-treatment process.
The pre-treatment process, also known as pre-treatment process, aims to improve the treated water quality, prevent water pollutants from polluting the membrane, extend the service life of the membrane, and reduce operating costs.
Membrane component connection method: It is often divided into primary and multi-stage connections (divided into primary and multi-stage connections). The so-called primary refers to the membrane separation of the feed after a single pressurization, and the secondary separation requires a second pressurization for membrane separation.
Post treatment process: Membrane permeates water, also known as fresh water, which is the effluent that passes through the reverse osmosis membrane under pressure. Due to the inability of the membrane to capture 100% of all inorganic and organic matter, there must be some ions and gases, such as Na+, HCO3-, CO2, etc., that pass through the water. If used for high-purity water, further processes such as ion exchange and deoxygenation tower should be used as post treatment for permeate water.

The reverse osmosis method is widely used for desalination of seawater and brackish water due to its high desalination rate, ability to simultaneously remove bacterial endotoxins and other organic matter, and low operating costs.
